(KEEN) is a nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one sports and recreational opportunities for all children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families and caregivers. KEEN’s mission is based on a few basic ideals: providing free recreational opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities by pairing them with trained volunteers for fun, noncompetitive activities. KEEN seeks to develop each athlete’s self-esteem and confidence, as well as recreational skills and talents, and to increase each athlete’s ability to participate in a broader range of recreational activities and environments.
KEEN currently offers a sports program at the Children’s Institute, Inc, in Echo Park. The program sessions are usually scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month, with the exception of holiday weekends. Athletes and volunteer coaches participate in activities from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. During June, July and August, KEEN provides swimming session twice a month at Variety Boys & Girls Club in Boyle Heights.
