PBS SoCal invites you and your students to submit media entries to the 51st Annual California Student Media Festival, presented in partnership by PBS SoCaL and CUE. Join us in celebrating student creativity!
What is the California Student Media Festival?
It’s a celebration of young voices and an opportunity for students to be recognized for the work they create in school or through extracurricular programs. It’s free to submit, and all projects will be recognized for participation. There are fabulous prizes for the winners, including cash for your organization or school.
Short films? Animations? Music videos? PSAs? We can’t wait to see them, so send them our way!

What qualifies as “student produced media”?
A student must be present in every aspect of the project. Aspects can include storyboarding, writing, planning, filming, and editing.
Our team is aware that abilities vary according to age and grade level. The most important thing to remember is that judges are instructed to evaluate entries based on their own merits and against their own instructional objectives.
What role is a teacher allowed to assume?
We would like for teachers to take on the role of supervisor or assistant. Teachers can oversee student work, or execute tasks as directed by student(s).
California Student Media Festival Scoring Rubric
As part of your Media Festival submission, you will need to state the instructional objectives and/or standards addressed by this project. In the case of non-subject area entries, you will need to state the purpose and benefit to the school program and students.
IMPORTANT: Your entry will be judged based upon the instructional objectives and/or standards you submit.

Media/Technical The integration of media objects such as text, graphics, video, animation, and sound to represent and convey information. Videotapes which include sound and images fit this definition. |
Subject Area Content The topics, ideas, concepts, knowledge, and opinions that constitute the substance of the presentation. |
Creative/Innovative The elements of the presentation that make it unique, original, and compelling. |

All elements clearly make a positive contribution to the final product. There are few technical problems, and none of a serious nature. |
Meets all criteria of the previous level and one or more of the following: reflects broad, in depth research and application of critical thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation); shows notable insight or understanding of the topic. |
Students have used media in creative and innovative ways that exploit the particular strengths of the chosen format or genre. The final product is unique, powerful, effective, and compels the audience’s attention.. |
