A famous Queen reportedly said: "Let them eat cake!" She must have heard about the Queen Mary's upcoming 80th Anniversary party and press conference, Sept. 26. To celebrate, the Queen Mary has commissioned what may be the world's largest ship replica cake designed by TV celebrity baker and pastry chef, Jose Barajas. The 20 foot long cake can serve over 1000 guests. There's another good reason to celebrate the ship's 80 years of public life.
The spectacular cake will contain one special token - a replica Queen Mary souvenir pin.
The fortunate guest - media and public alike - who is served this special slice of history will be awarded a luxury cruise on Cunard's flagship, Queen Mary 2. The winner will sail from Southampton to New York with travel to be completed by December 2015.
The Queen Mary, the world's most beloved ocean liner, celebrates 80 years of public life, Friday, Sept. 26. A public reception is planned - admission to the ship will be free - tours, parking and other amenities will be discounted.
Celebrity baker and pastry chef, Jose Barajas will present a spectacular replica of the ship - made as close to scale as flour and frosting will allow. The cake will be ceremonially cut by
attending dignitaries and surviving passenger, Mrs. June Allen. She came to America as a WWII war bride and was recently featured on the CBS Sunday Morning Show. One fortunate guest may win a luxury Cunard cruise on the Queen Mary 2.
Queen Mary General Manager, John Jenkins will make an important announcement
concerning the ship, in addition to recognizing her eighty years of public service. The Queen Mary was launched Sept. 26, 1934 on Scotland's River Clyde. She was and remains one of maritime history's most iconic vessels. Over 50 million people have visited the ship since
opening to the public. Annually over 1.4 million come to Long Beach to visit the Queen and learn of her remarkable history and more.
King George V read a personal letter to over 200,000 attendees when the ship was launched 80 years ago. Queen Elizabeth II recently sent her regards in recognition of the ship's
unprecedented influence on travel, culture and her wartime service. Commodore Everette Hoard will read both letters during the press conference prior to helping other dignitaries slice Chef
