WHO MAY ENTER?
This bee is for U.S. students in grades 3-5. We welcome students in public, private and parochial schools, as well as home-schooled students. You do NOT need your school's permission to compete.
PARTICIPATION LIMIT
There is no limit to the number of students from a school. Spellers do not have to be endorsed or entered by their school. For the 2 p.m. finals, we will accept the first 100 students to register and pay. If more than 100 students register and pay, we will have a spell-off at 1:45 to see which spellers will advance to the 2 p.m. finals. Remember, all spellers must be present and signed-in by 1:30.
Irvine 4th Grader Wins $1,000 at National Bee
WINNER
Congrats to fourth grader Atharva Patil, shown right. He is 9 years old and attends Brywood Elementary School in Irvine, Calif. in the Irvine Unified School District. The two winning words he correctly spelled were "telecommunication" and "deity" in rounds 11 and 12 of the 80-minute bee. This was his second year in this Bee.

Spellers, ranging from third to fifth grades, and coming from as far as Portland, Oregon, competed in this 9th-annual Bee on Mar. 14, 2010 at Bay Shore Church in the Belmont Shore community of Long Beach, Calif. The Bee is hosted annually by Justin Rudd and his nonprofit 501c3 Community Action Team (CAT).
2ND PLACE
The second place spellers were Arielle Williams, shown above, a 10-year-old fifth grader at Birney Elementary School in Long Beach and Patrick Aimone, shown right, a 9-year-old 4th grader from The Pegasus School in Huntington Beach. Arielle misspelled pessimism and Patrick incorrectly spelled vicarious. The pronouncer for the Bee is Kate Karp. With local newspaper editor Harry Saltzgaver serving as guest pronouncer for round 1.
3RD PLACE
The third place speller was Spencer Kim, a fourth grader from Yorba Linda. He attempeted to spell the word vinyl. The nine-year-old attends Bryant Ranch Elementary Schoool.
