L.A.’s Brightest New Holiday Tradition
Zoo Lights is an evening holiday light display at the LA Zoo.
The event transforms select areas of the zoo into a fantastical wonderland of glowing light animals rendered in LED lights, 3D projections, giant illuminated snowflakes, a disco ball forest, and glittering twinkle tunnels.
This year features more light animals than ever before, including, new this year, the world’s largest illuminated pop-up storybook.
Returning features include the disco ball forest and a glowing “Northern Lights” featuring animal constellations that come to life. Other favorites have been reimagined with new visuals and music this season, including the dynamic holiday tree at the entrance, the animated elephant herd, and the dramatic water show.
LAIR again is a focal point of the Zoo Lights experience, with the amphibians, reptiles and insects on display throughout the evening. (LAIR also offers respite from the elements on a cool night).
Please note: the only animals available for viewing during this event are the reindeer and the LAIR creatures; the Asian elephants can choose to be outside or in their barn.
Stroll and gaze at the dazzling displays, some of which are interactive, while enjoying festive music and real reindeer on display. There will also be designated spots for that perfect selfie or family portrait, and holiday treats and gifts available for purchase.
Mischievous glowing monkeys have reimagined the Zoo’s holiday displays according to their own whimsy, and beckon visitors on a tour that includes visits with a giant origami rhino and singing elephants, among other fantastical creatures. Journey through this glittering landscape featuring light tunnels and overhead projections toward the final destination – a bustling Hollywood scene where animal friends appear on a red carpet.
L.A. Zoo Lights is produced in collaboration with theatrical set designer Gregg Lacy and the lighting expert John McGuire of Bionic League – renowned for innovative, breathtaking stage shows and large-scale events. Amid eye-popping creativity and technical wizardry will be a nostalgic nod to the past, with select pieces from the L.A. DWP’s Festival of Lights – a bygone Griffith Park holiday tradition – on display.
Other sights and delights of the season include real reindeer on view beneath twinkling chandeliers, Santa perched atop a glowing “ice throne” (on select dates), and holiday treats and goodies available for purchase.
Santa will be at L.A. Zoo Lights on these dates, from 6:30 to 9:30pm
