11am – 4pm
Otis College of Art and Design will host its Sixth Annual Kite Festival adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, April 8, 2017, 11am – 4pm. This year’s festival is held in remembrance of alumnus and Disney legend Tyrus Wong. Wong, a regular at the festival since its inaugural year in 2011, was a celebrated animator, ceramicist, painter, and kite maker best known for creating the signature concept art for Walt Disney’s Bambi.
Attendees will see kite makers from across the United States showcase their work as they create a “gallery in the sky.” Featured kites include the evocative works of Melanie Walker and George Peters, the colorful, stylized kites of Ron Gibian, and the stunt kites of Kevin Bayless, co-founder of the Revolution Sport Kite Team.
To join in the fun, attendees will be able to create their own kite using a provided kit and basic design instruction. Through generous support from Los Angeles World Airports, The Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation, La Tijera Village, Art4Moore, and the Tides Foundation, Otis College is able to provide materials for participants to create up to 3,000 kites.
