FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES
1) Sing Out Loud
Sing Out Loud is a 30-minute, interactive introduction to opera for children and their families, featuring some of opera’s “greatest hits.” The performance is geared toward children from ages 4 to 10 and their families.
2) Art Workshops for Children
Hands-on art workshops will be offered throughout the day to children ages 4 to 10. Using opera as inspiration, children can make their own opera-themed masks or decorate a postcard to send to a loved one.
MUSICAL PERFORMANCES FOR ALL AGES
1) Young Artist Recital
Singers from LA Opera’s prestigious Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program will perform beloved arias and ensembles from favorite operas.
2) Great Opera Choruses Concert
Grant Gershon will conduct the LA Opera Chorus in a concert of famous choruses from a number of popular operas. Best of all, audience members of all ages—and of any musical ability—will have the exciting opportunity to join in the fun by singing along with the pros.
3) Pittance Chamber Music Concert
This chamber concert features an instrumental ensemble made up of members of the LA Opera Orchestra, joined by tenor Arnold Livingston Geis. The program will include folk songs arranged by Benjamin Britten, the song cycle On Wenlock Edge by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the string sextet by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
4) Opera Screenings
Watch video performances of several of LA Opera’s iconic productions, all filmed live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
THEATRICAL MAGIC
1) Self-Guided Backstage Tours (end at 12:30pm)
Go behind the scenes on a self-guided tour. Tours begin and end in the side lobbies of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and loop through the backstage areas of the theater.
2) Costume and Wig Presentations
Clothes may make the man, but highly detailed costumes and wigs help singers make magic. Some of our best will be on display throughout the day. Additionally, attendees can watch a highly skilled artisan from the wig department handknot a hairpiece.
3) Scenic, Prop and Sound Presentations
A variety of complex scenic elements help transform the stage into a magical world. Our behind-the-scenes experts will explain how sets are built and reveal the secrets behind a few of the special effects featured onstage. Attendees can also handle actual props used onstage during performances.
